Last week I watched the latest French film by director Cédric Klapisch, Chinese Puzzle (Casse-tête chinois). It’s the third installment of his Spanish apartment trilogy. I had no idea that Chinese puzzle was part of a trilogy and only found out afterwards and then quickly had to watch the previous two films. The first film is called The Spanish Apartment (L’Auberge Espagnole). I really enjoyed it. You are first introduced to Xavier, played by Romain Duris. The second film is called Russian Dolls (Les Poupées Russes).
Here’s what I like about these movies.
*You feel like you have taken a holiday…you get to hang out in Barcelona, St Petersburg, Paris, Brooklyn and Waterloo.
*The APARTMENTS. OMG…the character of Isabelle, played by Cécile de France has two of THE coolest apartments EVER. I actually spent some time trying to come up with photos of the loft that they filmed in in Brooklyn but could only find one. You just have to watch it. I want to LIVE in that loft! The Parisian loft from Russian dolls is pretty cool as well.
*All of the characters are cast well and..they are all just good entertainment. I also particularly liked the character of William, Wendy’s British brother. It’s nice to see his character arc and also the satisfaction that people can in fact change. Romain Duris is just such a happy-go-lucky charming guy, it’s hard not to like him as the lead. And then, of course Cécile de France…she plays her role PERFECTLY!
I highly recommend watching them…and start from the beginning!
