Interview with Niloufar Naghdi

I have known Nilo since fifth grade. She had just fled Iran and I had just moved from London. We both arrived to school in Coronado, CA with awkwardness and accents and became fast friends.  She is one of the most talented artists I know and I have been PLEADING with her for years to sell her work…this is my attempt to expose her AMAZING talents.  Now…if only I can get her to start an ETSY site!

Name: Niloufar Naghdi

If you could rename yourself what name would you prefer?

I like the name Bronte, I read Jane Eyre at a young age and it struck a chord with me, even though Charlotte Brontë wrote it under a different alias. I think I’m pronouncing it wrong though, it’s pronounced “Bronti” but I say “Brontay” – I like my version better.

Where do you live?

San Diego , CA

Where would you rather be living?

I would love to live somewhere with a colder climate, this 72 degrees all year round is for the birds!  San Francisco, New York, London, Amsterdam, Paris.

Occupation:

I’m a senior designer at a skateboard company. We have six brands we manage; Toy Machine Skateboards, Foundation Skateboards, Dekline Shoes, Pig Wheels, Ruckus Trucks and Brostyle. I have different responsibilities for each brand, from production work, to ads, apparel design, skateboard graphics, wheel graphics, catalogs, trade show p.o.p. , etc. you name it, I’m doin’ it!  I also do freelance work, mostly for bands.

What’s the best band you’ve seen live?

There is no way I can answer this question! There’s been too many, recently maybe Tame Impala.

If you could play hooky for a day, what would be your ideal day?

Waking up at a leisurely pace, then meeting up with friends and exploring the city.

Now…I happen to know you are an UBER talented artist. What’s your favorite painting and why?

Jean-Michel Basquiat,  untitled (Skull) – I don’t know why I’m so drawn to this painting. It just works for me visually, aesthetically and emotionally.

Jean-Michel Basquiat

When you paint, do you prefer acrylic, oil or watercolors?

I get bored with stuff pretty quickly so I like to experiment with different mediums. I mostly dabble in acrylic and oil stick. Lately I’ve been obsessed with woodwork. There’s an artist in Joshua tree, his name is Alma Allen, I really dig the small wood sculptures he’s doing – I’m obsessed!

How long does it take you to finish a painting?

Usually the thought process behind it takes a lot longer than the actual work! I can think about a painting for 6 months and then finish it in 2 days. (Maybe it’s procrastination). Sometimes it’s an immediate response, I have an idea and I have to finish it that night. I guess it depends on the idea.

What’s your most prominent memory from middle school?

I think my most prominent memory was that I never felt like I fit in, even though I had moved to the states a couple years prior I was still trying to find my footing.

What’s your most prominent memory from high school?

Hanging out with friends at the kiosk at lunch, so many fun memories.
