A few weeks ago I was reading the Arts section of the NY Times and saw an article about an area of Brooklyn, called Bushwick that has become a street art mecca. What non-New Yorkers don’t realize is that as cool as Manhattan is, street art is not allowed, forcing street artists to head to Queens and Brooklyn. Bushwick has mostly become a mecca due to one guy, Joe Ficalora. He’s a lifetime resident of Bushwick and has stumbled into the profession of street art curator. He provides clean palates for street artists far and wide and they in turn, show up, paint to their heart’s content and provide Joe with a neighborhood full of AMAZINGLY cool free art!
I headed to Bushwick today and couldn’t believe my eyes. SUCH amazing art work! Unfortunately my camera was NOT working….thank goodness for Instagram! I couldn’t capture full segments of the pieces with my phone so in some cases I took small segments. I’m also sorry I haven’t tagged all the art work. Most pieces are part of the Bushwick collective (organized by Joe Ficalora).
